These Trading Cards Reimagined As Classic Films And TV Shows Are Frame-Worthy

Andy Warhol may have been the prince of pop art during his tenure, but artists since his demise have taken up the mantle. Zack Wallenfang is one of those artists, and if you peruse his page, you’ll find a plethora of images and art that’ll appease your pop-culture tastebuds. It’s obvious that Wallenfang is a student of art, but even more than that, he’s an enormous fan of film and TV, focusing his passion on the shows and films that have captured our imaginations for decades. (I’m super partial to the Event Horizon art below. Such an underrated horror film.)

Arguably his most fascinating work is the stuff you’ll see here: old-school Topps trading card wax packs — with the gum, of course — but in the style of your favorite film and TV entities.

Wallenfang, a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, told Uproxx that he gets his ideas from the films and shows that have left an impression on him.

The idea for that started last fall. October is known to many artists as Inktober, in which the challenge is to do a drawing a day for the whole month. I paid tribute to my favorite horror films and somewhere down the line I felt one of those drawings had a TOPPS wax-pack quality to it when it was finished, so I was compelled to doctor it onto a wrapper and haven’t been able to stop since. I mostly pick cult classics, films I grew up with, things I love for the right or wrong reasons; anything that would look believable as a trading card series but would never be marketed to kids.

What makes these really cool is the minutia — creases, ads, and even the correct date for the film etched on the side. Make sure you check out Zack’s full gallery of images on his page, as there’s much more to enjoy there.
