Kurt Russell’s Humongous ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Role Has Been Revealed

The bountiful spigot of Comic-Con footage has jammed and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer that Marvel revealed to the assembled in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con has yet to be released. Apparently, there is a reason to wait in line for a day of your life in the summer heat. Luckily, IO9/Gizmodo has a rather detailed account (which you should read in its full), and it sounds grand, showcasing Peter Quill and company (now with more Yondu and Nebula), a mouthy Rocket Raccoon, Sly Stallone, and Kurt Russell revealing that he is Peter Quill’s father, and oh, by the way, a living planet in human form named Ego. There’s also a ton of blue Michael Rooker badassery, but the “Russell as planet” thing seems like the one most worthy of unpacking.

In the comics, Ego is a sentient planet that was born into The Black Galaxy. Since the character debuted in 1966, he’s done battle with Thor, Charles Xavier, Reed Richards, and others. He was also imprisoned within Quasar and made to be a base for The Nova Corps. Stallone is playing a member of the Nova Corps, it should be mentioned, so hopefully these two characters have some kind of interaction because…

One thing that Ego has never been, though, is Peter Quill’s father. In the comics, that’s Jason of Spartax (aka J’son). James Gunn wasn’t shy about shooting down any notion that he would follow the comics on this matter, though. This, of course, sparked rumors. Adam Warlock? No. Thanos? Nope. Snake Plissken. That’s Peter Quill’s father and he occupies the form of a planet from time to time. One with an eyepatch, I hope.

Anyway, that’s about it detail wise on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but the film is set to debut on May 5, 2017 (with a Captain Marvel cameo?). And that’s really not that far away.
