Guillermo Del Toro Wants To Make A Jabba The Hutt Origin Story

Say this for Guillermo del Toro: The guy is never, ever short of ideas. While at Comic-Con, he discussed the movies he’s got coming, but perhaps most interesting is his pitch to Disney for, of all things, a Jabba the Hutt origin story.

If you only know him as the fat slug from Return of the Jedi, this may sound odd, but del Toro actually has a pretty good idea. The Hutts are an intergalactic crime family, so del Toro is thinking gangster epic, but in space:

“I would do the sort of ‘Godfather’ saga [about what] Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.” (Via)

Awwww, Guillermo, you’re much more of a Chewie. That said, even if having it star slugs who communicate entirely in grunts would likely be too much of a challenge, hell yeah we’d show up for Space Godfather. There’s actually an entire network of criminals and scum that was built in the Expanded Universe before Disney rebooted everything, and furthermore, Disney seems willing to explore it. Rogue One is a heist flick and The Adventures of Young Han Solo probably isn’t going to feature our favorite smuggler working on a used spaceship lot, dreaming of the Kessel Run.

That said, this is Guillermo del Toro, who’s working on a dozen movies at once. Crimson Peak won’t even have finished its theatrical run before he’s hard at work on Pacific Rim 2. So, we’ll either have to wait for his schedule to clear up, or for Disney to decide to give him a “special thanks” credit.
