The Internet Has A Long History Of Making ‘Independence Day’ Parodies

What was it about Independence Day that made it such blockbuster sensation 20 years ago? Was it because of Will Smith and his signature “Welcome to Earth” catch phrase? Was it because of Bill Pullman’s legendary motivational speech to the troops, or is it because humans will always be obsessed with watching our planet get obliterated by aliens on a big screen? No matter what your opinion is, you can’t deny the cheesetastic awesomeness of Independence Day.

As anyone who has ever forded the mighty river of the internet knows, people will always take awesome things and put their own spin on it. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s… not so great. However, Independence Day has inspired some pretty hilarious parodies in the years since its release. None of them have Liam Hemsworth peeing on an alien like the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, mind you, but they’re still worth a look.

Independence Day: Extended Scene

Thomas Middleditch (and Orange is the New Black‘s Matt McGorry) stars in College Humor’s Independence Day parody where aliens explore more sensible death options for the human race. Turns out aliens aren’t really into that whole “compromise” thing.

Shia LeBeouf’s Independence Day Speech

The Independence Day speech has never been more extreme thanks to Shia LaBeouf and his “Just Do It” campaign. Now, I’m not saying they should have recast President Whitmore with Shia LaBeouf for Resurgence, but should it get a sequel, that’s definitely an option to explore if Bill Pullman is over it.

Independence Day “Sweded”

Just in case you ever wondered what would happen if a bunch of dudes made a YouTube movie parody with absolutely no budget, PUSHITFILMS is here to show you. Even with the lack of funds, some of their low budget trickery is pretty ingenious.

Seattle’s Independence Day

Seattle may have dodged a bullet in the original Independence Day, but in this Almost Live! clip, it appears that the Kingdome and and a street band are the prime targets of these aliens — which seems to be fine until they start hitting things that are a little more close to home. Also, there’s bonus Joel McHale in a pre-Soup pre-2000s role in the long-lasting local Seattle sketch show.

Obama’s Independence Day Speech

Fandango proves that Barack Obama (or impersonator Reggie Brown) should spend the next twenty years playing the President of the United States in every major Hollywood movie. Sorry, Bill Pullman. You had a good run.
