Whether or not you think we needed a sequel to 1996’s Independence Day, we got one and it’s called Resurgence and as everyone knows, there was a new trailer just yesterday that reminded us all that it’s coming on June 24. What you may not have known is that this 20-years-in-the-making event isn’t just a cash grab for Fox. It’s also an experiment to see whether or not the studio can execute similar cash grabs down the line.
At CinemaCon last week, a variety of the film’s cast, including Jeff Goldblum, Sela Ward, Maika Monroe and Jessie Usher, talked about how Resurgence both stands on its own and exists as a potential set-up for more sequels and even more aliens. Monroe got into that idea when she said, “We also learn that there might be other species, too. Not just those aliens.” And Goldblum, who has to think this is all fairly hilarious as he lines his bank account, weighed in as well.
“I think what they have in mind is that if this is well enjoyed, then they have some ideas. And there may even be an artful reference towards the end of the movie of what could [happen next]. It sets up the possibility that it’s not over – that the fat lady has not yet sung.”
Far out. If there’s ever been a more eloquent announcement that there will be more Independence Day movies in our future, I can’t think of one.
