James Wan Says He’s Bringing His Brand Of Horror To ‘Aquaman’

Have we all had a nice long gawk at what Aquaman was up to in yesterday’s freshly unveiled Justice League Comic-Con footage? It was nice to see the misunderstood DC Comics vet handling business like the badass he is and apparently his stand-alone motion picture is going to have a bit of a scary element to it. Prepare your finest nightlight, etc.

Furious 7 helmer James Wan is the talent directing the upcoming Aquaman feature starring Jason Momoa. Chatting at San Diego Comic-Con, the Australian filmmaker noted that the horror skills he’s flexed as the director Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring films will pop up in the July 2018 superhero film.

“I love the fact that [Aquaman’s] never really been portrayed in the feature movie world before,” Wan said during the Warner Bros. SDCC panel, adding that he’s excited to have “the opportunity to explore this universe and bring a bit of my horror element into this, the deep sea, the scary world, and then also explore the wondrous world of Atlantis.”

Of course, Wan has previously shared that the film won’t be industrial strength grim in tone, so it’s not all spooky. The other big Aquaman news chunklet that’s tumbled out recently is word that Gangster Squad writer Will Beall is returning to the project. Beall was originally working on the film before exiting and working on the CBS TV adaptation of Training Day, but now he’s back and will be using a detailed treatment from Wan and DC Films co-head Geoff Johns. Consider us intrigued.
