Jon Hamm has been open about his post-Mad Men career, and while it seems like someone such as him shouldn’t be too concerned, the show has already cost him one huge role. According to Page Six, Hamm was a serious contender for Ben Affleck’s lead role in Gone Girl, but his contract with Mad Men prevented him from taking it. That’s right, we could have seen Jon Hamm’s penis, but he got cockblocked by a (Matthew) Weiner.

Considering the timing, Hamm was probably hampered more by scheduling than other more boring, obscure show business reasons, but that doesn’t make this loss easier on someone about to look career uncertainty in the face. Page Six used some overly dramatic words to describe Hamm’s mindset (“Hamm is still smarting from the career-hampering move…”), but that movie ended up doing pretty well. The tabloid said that Hamm expressed his career worries in GQ:

“The one constant thing I’ve had in my career is now removed. And that’s an eye-opener: Are people still going to take me seriously? Am I just going to do romantic comedies for the rest of my life? What’s next? And I don’t know, you know? I wish I was smug enough to have had a grand plan.”

How do we tell Jon Hamm how great he is? It’s a little heartbreaking to think he’ll have any kind of trouble with his career after proving his enviable range and admirable self-awareness. He’s been spending some time taking care of himself and might feel a little out of the loop, but he’s still Jon Hamm! Don’t be sad, Jon Hamm! Now you’re free to show your penis to everyone!

You’re a cool girl, Jon Hamm. We promise.
