Fans may not have been blown away by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but Warner Bros. continues to move full speed ahead with Justice League. The Zack Snyder-directed crossover movie went into production last week, and now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe has joined Justice League‘s already-stacked cast.

Apparently Dafoe, who played the villainous Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, will be doing the hero thing in the Justice League movies. Aside from the fact that he’ll be playing against type, Warner Bros. is staying very tight-lipped about Dafoe’s role in the movie. So, who exactly could he be playing?

The best bet is probably Martian Manhunter. The shape-shifting alien has been a staple of the Justice League for years, often falling into the role of de facto leader and/or coordinator for the team. Willem Dafoe could definitely deliver the gravitas needed to play J’onn J’onzz, and it would make practical sense, too. At age 60, Dafoe is a bit old to play a superhero, but with Martian Manhunter, he could hide behind CGI.

Another strong candidate would be Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man. A staple of numerous versions of the Justice League, Dibny has usually been depicted as a bit older than the rest of the members. The sober voice of reason for the team. It would be a good fit for Dafoe.

Other possibilities might include Justice League’s non-costumed mascot Snapper Carr, Metamorpho (another role where Dafoe could rely on CGI), one of the New Gods, possibly Orion or Mister Miracle, or maybe even The Atom. What do you folks think? Got any brilliant ideas I may have missed? Let’s figure this thing out, below.

Justice League Part One hits theaters November 17, 2017.
