The Ultimate ‘Lord Of The Rings’ And ‘Hobbit’ Box Set Can Be Your Precious, But It’s Going To Cost You

This past weekend, I went to a Star Wars Marathon hosted by the Alamo Drafthouse that, thankfully, only showed the Original Trilogy: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, back-to-back-to-back. It was the first time I had ever seen three movies in a row in a theater, and eight hours later, I never wanted to sit down again (he typed, while sitting). If the marathon had included every Star Wars film, including the prequels and The Force Awakens, I wouldn’t have bothered, and even that’s nothing compared to the endurance test that is Peter Jackson’s journey to Middle-earth.

It would take you over 17 hours to watch the theatrical editions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies, and another nine days (number approximate) to make your way through the additional footage and bonus features. You’ll need second (and third and fourth and fifth and sixth) breakfast, not to mention all the movies in one set, to complete that unexpected journey. You’re on your own with the food — though I’ve heard good things about po-tay-toes — but the Middle-Earth Limited Collector’s Edition can help with the at-home marathon.

For the first time ever, Peter Jackson’s epic adventure is available in one spectacular limited collector’s edition box set. The Limited Collector’s Edition includes 30 discs featuring all six Middle-earth films in their extended edition forms, housed in six stunning faux leather books and a collectible Hobbit-style wood shelf. The one-of-a-kind wood shelf is crafted from solid wood with design selected by Peter Jackson. In addition to the extended edition release of every film, the collection also includes all previously released bonus content from both the theatrical and extended editions. (Via)

How much will this precious — which goes on sale on October 8 — cost? $800. Better start planning your Smaug’s gold heist now.
