If there’s any woman in Hollywood that’s used to the vitriol that can be hurled at female leads in movies, it’s Melissa McCarthy. Sure, there’s few who are exempt from the typical trolling from Twitter and the internet, but McCarthy gets it from the mainstream media and press as well. Back in 2013, the New York Observer went so far as to call her “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.”
With years of experience dealing with comments like that, it’s no surprise that the recent outbreak of internet hatred over the gender-swapping Ghostbusters reboot just rolls off her back. Since the trailer debuted three months ago, it has gained the most dislikes of any video in YouTube history – something McCarthy doesn’t necessarily disagree with. Then we have the endless aggressive freakouts from Ghostbuster fanboys on the internet. She addressed the controversy in a recent interview with The Guardian.
“All those comments – ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really,” she said. “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood? I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [Falcone, her husband], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.”
