Based on the first trailer and latest tracks from The Lonely Island, it’s looking like Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will be the favorite to wear the crown of 2016’s Best Comedy. Obviously, there are plenty of Deadpool fans out there who believe that title is already locked up, and I’m sure the Nia Vardalos fan club will make a case for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Also, let’s not rule out the R-rated animated feature Sausage Party, the latest from Seth Rogen’s gaggle of laugh-givers. If anything, though, Popstar is looking like the spark to a potentially hilarious string of summer comedies, which is great news considering 2015 felt considerably light on laughter.
As we already know, Popstar is a Spinal Tap-esque mockumentary that tells the story of Conner4Real, a fictional, Justin Bieber-like star who is surrounded by yes-men and has more money than he knows what to do with. He’s famous, young, attractive, and exceptionally stupid, but the world is obsessed with him as he tries to remain on top despite his biggest flaws and his awful music.
Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone also star. Popstar hits theaters on June 3. R.I.P. Seal.
