Tea time and slaying the undead collide in the latest international trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and we’ve yet to see how well the two combine. While the initial trailer had a relatively cheeky tone, this one edges a bit too close to self-seriousness for comfort. Here’s hoping this is more of a Zombieland with corsets than another mopey mess like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
The idea of a zombie virus linked to the black plague is an intriguing one, but hopefully it isn’t as humorless as this trailer would predict. I’m all for using the pudding wine glass as a weapon, but don’t pretend that it’s anything other than ridiculous. Seth Graeme-Smith’s parody novel was one extended joke (19th century courtship, but with zombies), but that deadpan approach is definitely missing from this trailer. Still, with Lily James, Matt Smith, Lena Headey, and Charles Dance on board, the cast may just be talented enough to carry the film even if the execution is a bit flawed.
The most ludicrous thing in the trailer is definitely Lady Catherine de Bourgh expressing any kind of admiration for an obstinate, headstrong girl like Elizabeth. Give me zombies, but also canon character continuity.
