Never judge a book by its cover, or in this case a movie by its trailer. But holy moly, you guys, the first trailer for the female buddy comedy Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, looks like someone recut The Heat without any jokes. Sure, there’s a recurring bit about Witherspoon’s height and Vergara’s age, but other than that it seems to be your standard “different world” clichéd comedy that Witherspoon’s agent should have begged Warner Bros. to hold the trailer for until after the Academy Awards. You know, just in case the voters want to reconsider her Best Actress nomination.

The film, which was originally titled Don’t Mess with Texas (seriously), also co-stars Sean Penn, which is mind-boggling, and was directed by Anne Fletcher, who cut her teeth on Step Up, the movie that brought Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan together. That obviously has nothing to do with this movie, but I wanted to be positive about something. Hot Pursuit opens on May 8.
