This Video Breaks Down Rey’s Vision In ‘The Force Awakens’ And Creates More Questions Than Answers

Luke Skywalker’s blue-colored lightsaber has touched many important hands. Created during the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber was with him during his greatest moments as a Jedi, and also with him as he fell prey to the dark side. After Obi Wan Kenobi nearly killed Anakin, he took his friend’s lightsaber and held it for twenty years, until he gave it to Luke (spoiler alert), Anakin’s son.

But Luke lost the lightsaber when his hand was chopped off by Darth Vader on Cloud City during The Empire Strikes Back. How did it come into the hands of Maz Kanata? And more importantly, why is it calling out to Rey? GamesRadar delved into the clues that Rey’s vision in Star Wars: The Force Awakens for answers.

In the cantina basement, Maz Kanata told Rey, “That lightsaber was Luke’s. And his father’s before him. And now it calls to you.” Why lightsabers are suddenly choosing their own masters like wands in the Harry Potter-verse, we don’t know. But when you’re dealing with a lightsaber with possibly the most storied lineage in the history of the force, it probably has a reason. The force moves in mysterious ways, and this lightsaber is clearly an important key to Rey’s past, present and future.

The confusing part about the vision is that it clearly shows moments in which it wasn’t present. We see Rey in the hallways of Cloud City where Luke and Vader battled, we hear Obi Wan and Yoda call out to Rey, but why do we see Rey’s past on Jakku? Why would we see Luke’s final moments before going into hiding when the lightsaber at that point had been lost for decades?

Was this an oversight so the filmmakers could just make something super-cool and give Rey some mysterious exposition, or is this omniscient lightsaber thing going to continue on in Episode VIII?

Think about that while you watch the Cloud City battle for funsies.
