A ‘Star Wars’ Movie Based On The ‘Knights Of The Old Republic’ Video Game Is Reportedly In The Works

It seems like the Star Wars universe’s rapid expansion was tempered a bit in the wake of Solo‘s status as a less-than-enormous smash hit, but there’s a new film that will make a certain part of the fandom extremely excited if reports are to be believed.

Episode IX is coming, yes, and a trilogy from the folks who ushered Game of Thrones to its uneven end is on the horizon as well, but a Star Wars film based on a video game would be new. But, indeed, it seems that a movie based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in the works.

Knights of the Old Republic was a LucasFilm video game released in 2003 that’s long been beloved by Star Wars fans. The game let you become a Jedi, building your own lightsaber and making choices that moved you to the Light or Dark side of the force, or somewhere in between. Those choices also unlocked certain Jedi powers to use in battle, and told a winding story that took gamers to some of the furthest reaches of the greater Star Wars galaxy.

Nearly two decades later, the BioWare game’s story and battle mechanics are still beloved by gamers — you can probably get a version of it on a tablet if you go digging, and it’s still popular in the Steam store.

And according to Buzzfeed, a Star Wars movie based on the KOTOR universe is, indeed, in progress.

A movie based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — the beloved video game first released in 2003 — is currently being written by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) for Lucasfilm, three sources close to the project told BuzzFeed News.

As the story notes, there was some chatter at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago last month that a movie set 4,000 years before the first Star Wars film could be happening, but that’s a lot of sources and significant news that a writer is attached. The game’s story was massive, and there’s certainly a lot of cool angles a potential movie could play up with the old Sith and the Jedi that tried to keep them at bay.

And fear not, those of you who might be concerned that the Thrones duo might be in charge of the movie — Buzzfeed says they are not involved.

While there are many corners of the formidable Star Wars internet that have speculated that Benioff and Weiss will be the stewards of KOTOR, Kalogridis was hired in spring 2018 to develop the property.

If anything, it’s a good reminder to dust off your old Xbox and give that game another go to remember how good it was.
