The ‘Suicide Squad’ Assembles In A New Photo, And The Director Throws A Little Shade At Marvel

In an interview with USA Today, Suicide Squad director David Ayer (Training Day, Fury) released a new photo of the skwad and talked about the movie. To the surprise of no one who saw those set videos, he confirmed that Ben Affleck’s Batman makes a cameo to fight with Jared Leto’s Joker, whom Ayer says is “the king of Planet Joker.” Ayer also expressed some admiration for Affleck’s portrayal of Batman, saying, “You really sense that, but for the grace of God, he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”

Affleck can take that as a compliment, as Ayer makes it clear in the interview that he thinks good guys are “kinda boring,” but necessary, while directing a movie filled with villains opens up more possibilities for inverting audience expectations.

Ayer also threw a bit of shade in Marvel’s general direction with an oblique reference to the MCU’s infamous penchant for post-credits scenes as linking devices.

“For me, it’s a little more than just dropping a cut scene in the end credits to link projects. You really have to be thinking three movies downrange and how today’s movie will impact more later-cycle projects.”

Does this mean Amanda Waller won’t be showing up at Deathstroke’s prison cell in a post-credits scene to hand him a file named “Suicide Squad?” Oh wait, Batman: Arkham Origins already did that.
