Would ‘Superman Lives’ And These Other Unmade Films Be Cult Classics Today?

If you’ve caught either Jodorowsky’s Dune or The Death Of ‘Superman Lives,’ you’ll notice a distinct creative madness that seems to either run awry of studio meddling or balloons to a point that it can’t possibly work in a realistic sense. In the case of Superman Lives, you see a film that seems much more interesting than the teases and images we’ve seen in hindsight. Something that isn’t necessarily the joke we’ve thought it to be via the stories from Kevin Smith and the pictures of sleepy-eyed Nic Cage in an early Superman costume.

That’s where this clip from Screen Rant lives, showcasing the films that seemed too ambitious or too looney to exist, but might’ve actually turned out to be genius upon release. They’ve certainly reached some mythical status, like in the case of Jodorowsky’s Dune — I’m still waiting for his massive storyboard script book to find a release.

Other films included here are Sergio Leone’s Stalingrad epic that never came to be due to his death, Francis Ford Coppola’s long gestating Megalopolis, and The Beatles desired adaptation of Lord Of The Rings that was nixed by J.R.R. Tolkien. I don’t think I could get behind the last one, but the oddity alone might be enough to weep over its loss. John Lennon as Gollum trying to kill Paul McCartney as Frodo while Ringo cries about potatoes as Samwise.
