If you’re a fan of Ethan Hawke, you’ll be excited to know he’s got a new genre movie coming out January 9th. If you are really, really not a fan of Ethan Hawke, you will be excited to know his new movie opens with him nearly dying in a fire. Don’t believe us? Check out the first seven minutes above.

This comes courtesy of the Spierig Brothers, Australian filmmakers who specialize in getting a lot out of their tiny budgets. They first came to light with the cult movie Undead before coming to Hollywood and putting out Daybreakers in 2010. Which, come to think of it, is another movie where they lit Ethan Hawke on fire. In fact, that’s more or less central to the plot. Maybe he’s the Steve Buscemi to their Coen Brothers.

Anyway, Predestination is based on Robert Heinlein’s notorious short story -All You Zombies-, which is basically that Futurama episode where Fry knocks up his grandmother, only more serious and with a slight twist we won’t divulge here. Needless to say, there was no mad bomber in that one, and if you’re familiar with the story at all, it’s not really a huge leap to figure out who the bad guy most likely is.

But the Spierigs are always good for a fun action sequence, and Hawke, who seems out to earn the title of “The Twenty-First Century’s Vincent Price” considering all the genre movies he’s in, is usually fun to watch. Besides, you don’t have to go to a theater: It’s in theaters and available on demand January 9th.
