Watch This Hilarious, Improvised, And Rare Camera Test Scene From 1979’s ‘The Muppet Movie’

One of the joys of the internet is the notion that you’ll never know what will pop up in its ether. Hence this wonderful gem that was posted on YouTube on Saturday by RSNY TV, and reposted on Reddit by AGHY778. The YouTube video claims that it’s camera test footage from 1979’s Oscar-nominated The Muppet Movie, and that the dialogue from the actors is all improvised.

On first glance at the footage, it seems like both of those statements are correct. In the first sequence, Fozzy and Kermit have a very meta and existential conversation involving their reality. If the banter between the two is improvised, it’s damn fine and brilliant. Next we see Ms. Piggy and Kermit discussing the possibility of having a child, to which Kermit asks, “Do you know what you get when you cross a frog and a pig?”

This footage is golden, and I’m not just saying that because I grew up watching The Muppets. Okay, maybe I have some pretense for loving this. But, to see The Muppets having these fun, intimate moments is really a joyous thing: The shot of Ms. Piggy and Kermit sitting on a log together evokes childhood memories that have been trapped in my mental betamax recorder. Thank you, internet.
