If there was ever a movie that was screaming for a sequel, it’s Top Gun. Not that we’ve ever needed a true sequel to any film, it’s just odd that a second adventure featuring Maverick and the boys never happened. Tom Cruise is currently getting ready for the fifth Mission: Impossible movie to hit theaters, but he should be concerned with Top Gun 2. There is a part for him after all.

During a group interview with the press ahead of Terminator: Genisys, Skydance CEO David Ellison and CCO Dana Goldberg dropped some details about the script and what we can expect from the sequel. According to Collider, it’s going to be modern warfare meets the ’80’s best:

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” Ellison said. “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.”

He added, “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

And like I said, there is a role for Tom Cruise for when he’s ready:

“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” Ellison said.

Just picture Maverick being forced to take down a rogue drone like in Stealth, but this time not a steaming trash pile on film. Or maybe it’ll be Maverick attempting to whip a group of drone pilots into shape and show them the wilder side of life. That volleyball match is going to look a lot different with those carpal tunnel braces and stretch marks.

Too bad it won’t be a crossover with the Independence Day sequel. Get Maverick out there to take out some alien scumbags. Or secretly join them because he’s a Scientologist. Why didn’t we think it through!
