‘Toy Story 4’ Will Be A Love Story Between Woody And Bo Peep

As anyone who’s paid attention knows, the Toy Story series is about the love that blooms between a cowboy, Woody, and a space ranger, Buzz Lightyear. It’s like Brokeback Mountain, except with sharks. In Toy Story, they meet; in Toy Story 2, Buzz rescues Woody because he can’t live without him; and in Toy Story 3, when they think they’re going to die, the last thing they do is hold hands. No wonder Toy Story 4 is a total reset — where do you go from there?

You break them up, apparently.

Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter confirmed today that the fourth film in the Toy Story franchise, which is due out 2017, will be about Woody and Bo Peep falling in love.

“At Pixar and Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money,” he said. (Via)

That doesn’t explain Cars 2, but sure. Lasseter wouldn’t say when Toy Story 4 takes place because, as you may recall, Bo Peep wasn’t in the third movie; she wasn’t even mentioned, with fans theorizing that Andy either sold her in the long gap between Toy Story 2 and 3 or she got eaten by the dog. Her unexplained departure left more time for Buzz and Woody shenanigans, the way it was meant to be. But I’m sure Randy Newman will fill us in on her fate.
