It’s been a pretty open secret for a while now that the Wonder Woman movie will be at least partly set during World War I, although Warner Bros. has yet to officially confirm the Great War backdrop. We also don’t really know the extent of the World War I stuff. Is it just a couple brief flashbacks, or is pretty much the whole dang movie set during Downton Abbey times?
Well, we now have a confirmation on the WWI setting and some hint of the scope of the historical stuff thanks to Chris Pine, who will play Wonder Woman’s love interest, Steve Trevor.
“It’s [World War I] a period we don’t see often. It’s usually World War II. Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here. I’ve got people in deep background that have entire lives. It’s awesome, it’s actual make-believe land.”
You don’t dress 500 extras in elaborate period costume for throwaway flashbacks. It seems like Wonder Woman is really committing to its WWI setting, which will certainly be interesting. Are people ready for superheroics set amongst the horrors of WWI trench warfare?
Pine also talked a bit about his character Steve Trevor…
“Steve Trevor is a rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization. He’s a worldly guy, a charming guy and it’s going to be a great, fun film. There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes.”
Hopefully Wonder Woman can nail the Diana-Steve romance because, if done right, their relationship is a lot of fun, and can bring something new to the superhero movie sphere. Wonder Woman hits theaters June, 2017.
