In ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ Magneto ‘Doesn’t Really Care Anymore’

In an early trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, life has not seemed to be treating Magneto all that well. And, apparently, that’s a big part of the reason he does what he does in the movie, according to Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender, speaking to ScreenRant, was asked why Magneto, of all people, would team up with Apocalypse. Fassbender’s response was telling:

“…I think he’s just come to a point where he’s been pushed to that place where he doesn’t care anymore, he’s kind of dead inside. [Apocalypse] has caught him at a very low, vulnerable point where he doesn’t really care anymore whether he dies or not or what happens…”

In other words, Magneto is pretty much done, and it’s hard to blame him. So far, he’s not only lost his best friend, but is directly responsible for severely injuring him. He has failed repeatedly to protect mutantkind by his own standards. To make matters worse, he has lost Mystique and also learned that his quest for mutant rights will be repeatedly thwarted to the point where his nightmare scenario would actually happen (albeit in another timeline). No wonder he starts the movie in a bad mood and joins a cult.

The main question, of course, is how he manages to shake off Apocalypse and become, if not a good guy, at least slightly less dangerous again. We’ll find out May 27.
