Empire magazine has an excellent feature this month on the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, and, in addition to some new pictures, they also have a meaty interview with Zack Snyder, who’s become something of a ringleader for the DC movie universe. Here he is explaining the studio’s approach to getting DC firing on all cylinders via the Playlist:

“What we are doing is ground up all the way. It is one giant story. The first thing we had was the ‘Justice League‘ concept. The other movies, in a way, have to support that. That is our Wonder Woman, our Aquaman. They have their own creative concepts that supports them, but they do serve ‘Justice League‘ in the coming together of those heroes,” he said, while also teasing what Empire describes as an “elusive” cameo for Aquaman in ‘Batman V Superman.’

And echoing the sentiments of Warner Bros. chief Greg Silverman, Snyder says that while everything is mapped out, filmmakers coming into the universe will be able to put their mark on the material. “I want all the other directors of the other films to be able to stretch their legs and do what they want, but at the same time there is a big interconnected universe,” he said. “I have given everyone amazing access to our story, to me, and what we are doing. All the films have like-minded conceptual jumping on points.”

A lot is riding on Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad getting everything off on the right foot. Having Batman v Superman as a lead in to the Justice League concept is smart, but, if fan reaction to the film is weak, then you’ve just tainted the only two established DC movie franchises while setting Wonder Woman up to fail, as well.

There’s no doubt that Snyder knows how to put together an amazing-looking movie, but Sucker Punch and Man of Steel prove he needs a solid script to make everything really gel. For the sake of the extended DC universe, I hope they’re getting Dawn of Justice right. It would take a kryptonite-infused disaster to derail the tent-pole DC superhero movies, but all the lesser guys like The Flash, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern, and Aquaman are relying on 2016 going well to ensure survival.
