Yo La Tengo Turned Love Into Death From Above In Their Apocalyptic ‘Friday I’m In Love’ Cover Video

Indie rock darlings Yo La Tengo have been releasing albums for almost 30 years now. Along the way, they have garnered at least a bit of a reputation for doing cover songs and humorous music videos. For their latest album, Stuff Like That There, out August 28, they combine the two in a music video for their cover of The Cure’s immortal “Friday I’m In Love.”

The original is a top-notch song, and this cover is absolutely worthy of the source material. It’s a softer, quieter take, but it sounds quite pretty, and is very much in line with what people have come to expect from Yo La Tengo. The same goes for the music video which is, frankly, bonkers. Directed by Jason Woliner, who, among other things, worked on MTV’s Human Giant and Comedy Central’s Nathan For You, the video follows Georgia Hubley as she goes about her business nonchalantly, while all around her giant hearts are falling from the sky and killing people mercilessly. Ira Kaplan still looks unnervingly like Garry Shandling. It has everything you could want.
