Now You Can Hear Some Of Ryan Adams’ Covers From Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’

By now, you’ve probably heard that Ryan Adams is covering Taylor Swift’s pop monolith 1989 in its entirety. Swift has heard about it, at least, and she’s very excited, because T-Swift does not do muted emotions. She may be even more excited now, because Adams has been delivering little tastes of how the songs are sounding so far.

Adams has taken to the internet to post snippets of his versions of “Out of the Woods” and “All You Had to Do Is Stay.” He compared his cover of “Out of the Woods” to The Smiths, and called it “maybe the best sad song I ever did,” which, if you are familiar with Adams’ output, is a statement of some significance. Adams also claimed his take on “Shake It Off,” the biggest song on the album, is both “spooky” and reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

In addition to the music, Adams posted some artwork by an artist who goes by “Scissorsaurus” that is a take on the album cover for Sonic Youth’s Goo, which has little to do with Taylor Swift otherwise. Much like punk covers, Adams’ take on 1989 should give people who would never listen to pop music for whatever inane reasons an excuse to check out Swift’s craftsmanship. They can listen to Adams without losing street cred with the indie crowd. The rest of us, though, Adams included, will just shake it off.
