Ab-Soul Schools Lil Uzi Vert On The Value Of DJ Premier Beats

Ab-Soul has been outspoken when it comes to the new generation of hip-hop artists. A couple years back he referenced Young Thug wearing dresses on “47 Bars,” and, on Wednesday, he let it be known he has issues with rappers who pass on DJ Premier beats. Sound familiar?

Way back in February, Lil Uzi Vert refused to spit a freestyle over a Preemo beat, and it caused quite a bit of an uproar online among hip-hop heads. For whatever reason, Ab-Soul must’ve just heard about it since it’s been almost eight months since the incident.

“All these new ‘lil’ n***az is weak as the time it took to create earth,” he tweeted. “We don’t pass on PRIMO beats in this sport kids!”

This debate between artists like Ab-Soul who cater to those who appreciate lyrics versus artists like Lil Uzi Vert that create party/club music almost exclusively is never going to end. Just last week, Pete Rock took offense to music by Young Dolph and Lil Yachty. It’s a generational gap where both sides aren’t wrong. We’ve seen this back and forth discussion many times every year, and we’ll likely experience it just as much as long as hip-hop is around.

It might be cliche to say but there’s room for everybody in the music industry. Certainly, Lil Uzi Vert doesn’t take any food out of Soul’s mouth and vice versa. If anything, Soul should be happy: there are more DJ Premier beats for him if nobody new wants them.
