Diehard Kendrick Lamar fans are probably very familiar with the work of Anna Wise. The rising singer has contributed background vocals throughout both Good Kid M.A.A.D. City and To Pimp A Butterfly, even telling Billboard that his alien voice flow is inspired by her early work. Her contributions aren’t in the spotlight, but they’re clearly part of Kendrick’s foundation.

Now, Wise has taken those dynamic vocal talents on a solo venture, delivering her debut project The Feminine: Act 1 to the masses. Unlike working with KDot or her band Sonnymoon, this project is 100% hers and clearly allowed the singer to expand her creativity.

While you can hear familiar stylings on brooding cuts like “Precious Possession” and “Bitchslut,” Anna’s mood is a bit more bright on her Gap commercial in the making “Decrease My Waist, Increase My Wage” and club-ready single “Go.” Amidst the wide range of vibes presented by the aforementioned songs is “Girl Mother Crone,” a driving track that’s built on an entrancing mouth-based bassline and Wise’s seductive vocal tricks. Despite only being a minute long, this highlight immediately commends attention and proceeds to build listeners up to a point where they’re ready to pop.

Anna’s voice might be more familiar than her name for the time being, but with solo efforts this well-rounded and a rolodex full of amazing connects, we’re sure her face will be plastered everywhere sooner than later. Stream The Feminine: Act 1 below before purchasing a copy.
