The BET Awards decided to open up the the show by taking cues from the Broadway hit Hamilton. Hosts Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson, both draped in full colonial garb, pulled off a quick medley of hit songs. Anderson kicked things off by doing a rendition of Desiigner’s “Panda.” Ellis Ross followed by channeling her T Murda alter ego to run through O.T. Genasis’ “Cut It.” After verse one, the Black-ish actress stopped to ask her co-star, “Anthony, why are we cutting it?,” which is probably a question a lot of people in the crowd were trying to figure out.

The two then went into an operatic version of The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face” with them trading Midway through, they stopped and Anderson invited his “favorite Hamilton” to the stage: R&B great Anthony Hamilton, who appeared singing “Coming Where I’m From” while brandishing a musket. Before their time was done, the trio closed out the opening with a quick run through of Yo Gotti’s “Down in the DMs.” Somewhere, Lin-Manuel Miranda has to be proud to see his influence permeating culture completely.
