Beach Fossils Are Still Indie Rock’s Best Drifters On ‘Silver Tongue’

Few acts are as good at conveying the sensation of drifting as Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils. Even their name brings to mind something in constant and slow-going motion, a solid trying to settle down in a loose and ever-shifting landscape. In their four-year absence following the excellent Clash The Truth, plenty of bands have stepped up to try and fill the void left by their floating tracks. But now the band is returning to claim their throne and with songs like “Silver Tongue,” it shouldn’t be hard.

“Tongue” doesn’t sound much like the two tracks from Beach Fossils upcoming album Somersault, opting for none of the jazzy experimentation of a track like “Saint Ivy.” But given how lush it sounds, we could easily imagine it falling into place around the same time as a song like “This Year.”

The band recorded the track for the Our First 100 Days album, an anti-Donald Trump compilation that grew out of another protest project and aims to raise money for progressive causes. Like most of the tracks in the nearly completed comp, the song doesn’t address the president directly, instead hoping that a great song will be enough to pull in listeners and purchases that can be filtered to organizations working for women’s rights, immigration reform and combating climate change.
