Kanye West recently admitted he’s a better artist than he is a celebrity, which seemed like a pale way of saying that he understands people may dislike him strongly for what he sees as being himself. But maybe Kanye doesn’t get enough credit for championing self-expression in the way he does here on the E! series I Am Cait, which documents Caitlyn Jenner’s new life post-transition. Kanye offers a bit of his own unapologetic philosophy and endorsement of Caitlyn’s leap forward:
I think this is one of the strongest things that happened in our existence as human beings, that are so controlled by perception. ‘Cause you couldn’t have been up against more. Like, your daughter’s a supermodel, a celebrity. Every type of thing. And it was still like ‘F*ck everybody. This is who I am.’
Kanye’s empathy bleeds through the filter of his devotion to individual freedom. Rather than paint Caitlyn alone as a hero, though, he offers his thoughts on the global struggle of trans people to be recognized and praises humanity for allowing itself to evolve and accept new ideas. That’s signature Kanye West, finding the nugget of vision and forward-facing values in everyone and shining his very unique beacon on it.
