September 2 can’t get here soon enough. And that’s not because people get paid at the first of the month either. It’s then that people will finally get their hands on Isaiah Rashad’s sophomore set. While we count down the days, Zay was kind enough to bless fans with a song titled “i mean.”

One of the questions that comes with follow-up projects is how they compare to their predecessor. When thinking in relation to Civilia Demo, “i mean” is an extension of the sound were first experienced in 2014. Produced by Black Metaphor, the song barely clocks in at three minutes but each second is used wisely. In ways, the shadowy sounds help create this dark void where Isaiah resides and where listeners are invited to listen as he spills his unfiltered thoughts, leaving them scattered on the floor to be reassembled like a puzzle. By the song’s end, Zaywop’s even testing out his vocals, too, going beyond to show how his style has evolved.

The release of “i mean” comes only days after TDE released the song “Free Lunch” and its accompanying video. Rashad revealed that the track won’t be on his still untitled project but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. If the throwaways are this good, that means September 2 could be filled with greatness.
