Kanye West‘s footprint on the music landscape is impossible to ignore at this point. His artistry is truly unparalleled at his level. So, when it was announced that he would be accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the highest honor that MTV can bestow upon an artist, we knew that we would be in for something big. But who knew that Kanye would pretty much deconstruct the idea of award shows entirely?
While accepting the prestigious honor at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards after being introduced by his former VMA nemesis Taylor Swift, Kanye dismissed the idea of pitting artists against each other in a lengthy speech. Citing the instance at the 2007 Grammys when both Gnarls Barkley and Justin Timberlake lost the Album of the Year category, he shot down the idea that these artists should have to think of themselves as “losers.”
“I sat at the Grammys and saw Justin Timberlake and Cee Lo lose. Gnarls Barkley and the ‘SexyBack’ album… Justin, I ain’t trying to put you on blast, but I saw that man in tears, bro. And I was thinking like, he deserved to win Album of the Year. And the small box that we are as entertainers of the evening, how could you explain that… I still don’t understand award shows. I don’t understand how they get five people who work their entire life, one sold records, sold concert tickets, to come, stand on a carpet and for the first time in their life, be judged on a chopping block and had the opportunity to be considered a loser. I don’t understand it, bro!”
Fear not, Kanye. Justin ain’t mad.
Also admitting that he may have rolled up a little something beforehand, he spoke on the hatred and hardships he faced after his infamous 2009 VMAs moment, saying:
“It crosses my mind a little bit like when I go to a baseball game, and 60,000 people boo me. It crosses my mind a little bit. And I think if I had to do it all again, what would I have done? Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank a half a bottle of Hennessy and given it to the rest of the audience? If I had a daughter at that time, would I have went onstage and grabbed the mic from someone else’s [hand]?”
Capping off the “anti-award show” acceptance speech, Yeezus dropped a major bombshell:
I don’t know what I finna lose after this. It don’t matter, though, because it’s not about me. It’s about ideas, bro, new ideas, people with ideas, people who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020, to run for president.”
BOOM!!! YEEZUS FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020.
