Kelly Clarkson Covered ‘Purple Rain’ And It’s All You Need To See Today

When Kelly Clarkson isn’t performing songs off of her own long list of hits, including the best pop song of the 2000s “Since U Been Gone,” she’s been known to cover other artists chart toppers, as well. From Rihanna’s “B*tch Better Have My Money” to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” to even Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” Well, this time around, she pulled a major #TBT when she covered “Purple Rain” by Prince while performing in St. Paul, Minn. last night.

On this particular tour, Kelly is letting fans pick which songs she covers. It’s no surprise that Minnesotans would pick something from the purple one’s catalog. Before starting off, she prefaced the cover by saying, “I ask you to love me, and not judge me, because it’s such a great classic song from someone from here.” It’s obvious that she would crush it, but still, the humility is nice to hear.

Coincidentally, in nearby Minneapolis, indie rockers TV on the Radio covered “Purple Rain” in the same night. The band performed at First Avenue, where much of the movie Purple Rain was filmed and the song was recorded.

While we can’t deny that this may be Prince’s magnum opus, we kinda wonder what Kelly Clarkson or TVOTR would sound like covering some of his other songs. Maybe Kelly could cover “Kiss” or TV on the Radio could cover “Diamonds and Pearls.” He’s got a deep catalog. Let’s go crazy!
