Kurt Cobain wasn’t so different from you or me. I mean, sure, he was more talented, more rich, more handsome, and looked better in a cardigan than we ever will, but other than that, identical. Also, his mixtapes were a lot more complicated than our Spotify “songs about tacos” playlists. In 1988, a year before Nirvana released their first album, a 21-year-old Cobain assembled a “Montage of Heck” using a 4-track cassette recorder. It wasn’t a conventional High Fidelity-esque mix, but rather, a scattered assortment of noises, zipping from William Shatner to the Beatles to the Partridge Family to, later on, Daniel Johnston screaming about the Devil. It was weird as hell, and you can hear it now!
