Nickelback Responds To Canadian Cops Using Their Music As Punishment For Drunk Drivers

Last Saturday Canadian cops in Kensington posted a threat to their Facebook page concerning drunk drivers. Aside from the usual punishments that accompany the charges of driving while intoxicated, any perpetrators would be forced to listen to Nickelback on the way to the station. Well, the band is clearly sick and tired of their music being treated like a joke — in this case an outright punishment — and per TMZ they’ve responded to the viral Facebook post with a demand that it be removed.

The post has indeed been taken down. What remains to be seen is whether or not the Kensington police force will be following through with their threat? TMZ reports that the cops said “they never meant to embarrass the band, they were just looking for an effective way to get the anti-DUI message to the public.”

This isn’t the first time the band have faced teasing, obviously, nor the first time they’ve shut it down. Earlier this year when UK-based band Royal Blood took a shot at them on Twitter, the band administered a sick burn right back.

What is it about Nickelback that makes them so easy to tease, anyway? I’ll be the first to admit that I still know every word to “How You Remind Me” and heartily enjoyed singing it a decade or so ago. Like Smash Mouth’s “All Star” or Semisonic’s “Closing Time,” it seems like its the group’s ubiquity that gets under people’s skin. In twenty years, they’ll probably go through a “cool” revival with our kids! Then I’ll be a cool mom for liking them back in the day, can’t wait for that.
