Pantera’s Phil Anselmo Shouted ‘White Power’ And Snapped A Nazi Salute During A Concert

Phil Anselmo of the legendary heavy-metal and sludge-metal acts Pantera and Down may have added more fuel to the long-gestating rumor that he’s an outright racist. At the end of Dimebash, a festival celebrating late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, Anselmo performed “Walk” and then snapped off a Nazi salute while shouting “white power” at the crowd.

The crowd can be heard loudly booing when Anselmo starts giving a Nazi salute and laughing as he’s escorted from the stage. Outside the niche subcultures catering directly to that sort of ideology, metalheads have a pretty long history of shaming the racists in their ranks. This isn’t the first time that Anselmo has spouted this sort of rhetoric, so we’ll see what happens.

For his part, Anselmo maintains that he was only kidding. In a YouTube comment underneath the upload, Anselmo says he was making a joke about the white wine he was drinking.

“Ok folks, I’ll own this one, but dammit, I was joking, and the “inside joke of the night” was because we were drinking f*cking white wine, hahaha…
Of all f*cking things.
Some of y’all need to thicken up your skin.
There’s plenty of f*ckers to pick on with a more realistic agenda.
I f*cking love everyone, I fucking loathe everyone, and that’s that.
No apologies from me.
PHA ’16”

Is that enough to squash this fire? It may not be. This seems pretty incriminating for the metal legend.
