Quick! Can you tell Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica apart? If the answer’s yes, you may be overqualified to work customs in Belarus.

RHCP bassist Flea shared a bizarre and hilarious story about his band’s awkward interaction with Belarusian customs. It was a case of mistaken identity taken to a whole other level.

“We were called into customs officials office at an airport in Belarus and they asked us to sign a bunch of Metallica cd’s and photos,” explained Flea while showing off evidence of this unlikely autograph session. “We tried to explain to them that we weren’t Metallica but they insisted that we sign anyway. They had the power. Well I did play fight fire with with with Metallica once. I love Metallica anyways but I’m no Robert Trujillo.”

If there’s an upside, it looks like Flea got to hang out near a lovely looking couch. Never doubt the glamour of being an international rock star.

It definitely seems strange that the officials would be so into Metallica that they’d have merchandise at the ready, yet couldn’t piece it together that Flea doesn’t exactly resemble anyone in Metallica. It’s a bit like confusing Kelsey Grammer with Jerry Seinfeld. Yes, they both had hit TV shows, but you don’t need an 8×10 to tell them apart. If only Flea could have signed this picture instead.
