Reunited Stone Roses Played Their First Major Concert In 16 Years Last Night

The Stone Roses only released two albums, in 1989 and 1994, before breaking up, yet fans have been clamoring for a reunion for nearly two decades. Why? Because their self-titled debut, equal parts pub rock, dance beats, and psychedelia, is considered by many to be THE greatest album of all-time. (Even if you don’t agree, “I Wanna Be Adored” is a perfect song.) Last night, 75,000 fans got their wish: the Stone Roses played a hometown gig in Manchester’s Heaton Park, their first major U.K. show in 16 years.

According to NME:

Just after 9pm (BST), the intro track of the Supremes’ “Stoned Love” faded out and what the world was waiting for took place; Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani, and Reni walked onstage and powered into their 1989 classic “I Wanna Be Adored.”

Following quickly with “Mersey Paradise,” “Sugar Spun Sister,” and “Where Angels Play,” Brown quipped, “As you can see, we’ve still got it.” (Via)

Yup, Brown’s still a cocky prick, and before playing “Elizabeth My Dear,” he cracked, “This song’s dedicated to those parasites down the road, celebrating 60 years of tyranny!” I think you can guess who he’s referring to. But one question remains: when are they coming to the States? We’re the ones who used a song of theirs in Death to Smoochy. That’s gotta mean something, right? Here’s a video of last night’s show.
