20-Year-Old Rosie Carney Brings Irish Folk Into 2017 With Her Stirring New Track ‘Your Moon’

Donegal, Ireland-based singer-songwriter Rosie Carney is only twenty years old. But listening to her mature music and experiencing her distinctive sound, you wouldn’t be able to tell. For the last few years, Carney has been dropping singles here and there and her most recent is “Your Moon.” Listen below.

The track is an experiment with self-exploration, something that Carney addresses frequently in her delicate and evocative lyrics that often open up about her mental health. Carney sings out: “If you were to ask me / Where I was to go / Well, the answer is easy / Cuz I’ll never know.” She grapples with a lack of direction and confusion regarding decisions to make for her own future. She concludes with “All your stars are shining / But I’ll never be your moon,” knowing that she must do what is best for herself in order to carry on.

In a statement about the track, Carney told NPR:

“‘Your Moon’ is a song written about realizing different truths within yourself or within a relationship, and finding meaning in that truth. I wanted to capture the feeling of realizing that [just because] the circumstances and timing may seem right in things, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is what’s truly best for you. We spend a lot of time doing things for other people in life, focusing on what’s best for someone else, and trying to please people. But sometimes we have to realize what’s truly best for ourselves and what would be more beneficial in the bigger picture. It’s about being selfish in the best possible way, and not being afraid to put yourself first.”
