Santigold Explained Her Narcissism Anthem ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Myself’ On ‘The Tonight Show’

On Wednesday night, Santigold performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She tore the house down with the lead single from her very good new album 99¢, the excellent “Can’t Get Enough of Myself.” It was also a visually dynamic and thematic performance, which makes sense given the work Santigold put into creating the music video for the song. If you haven’t seen it (you should), she used our modern technology of webcams to make the viewer appear all over the video. On top of performing on Fallon, Santigold took a few minutes of her time to discuss the making of the song for The Tonight Show’s “How I Wrote that Song” video series.

Whilst wearing a t-shirt with a picture of herself and a wig on it, Santigold talks about how she went to the Swedish gentleman behind the musical act B.C., who gets a “featuring” credit on the song, looking for an upbeat song, and Santigold was given the bones of the song, and the title, which she felt perfectly fit into her album’s themes of narcissism and self-absorption.

Santigold set out to create the most uplifting, peppy, deceptively empowering song about narcissism possible, and she pretty much succeeded. She also discusses her favorite lyrics from the song in the video, and says that she likes to consider herself a funny writer. If nothing else, she’s certainly an interesting musician. If she wanted to be conceited, nobody would blame her.
