UPDATE: TMZ reports that the singer died due to cardiac arrest.
Sad news tonight in the rock world that grunge legend Scott Weiland of the iconic hard rock band Stone Temple Pilots has passed away at the age of 48. TMZ reports and his personal Instagram account confirms that the singer was found dead on his tour bus prior to a show with his solo act, Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts, in Minnesota. The show was cancelled earlier tonight without explanation.
Weiland had been a huge part of the rock music scene of the 1990s and 2000s with both Stone Temple Pilots as well as the supergroup Velvet Revolver. He had also very publicly battled substance abuse, which prompted several hoaxes to his death, but at this time, it appears the rock superstar has actually passed away. Just earlier this evening, Weiland posted a few throwback photos to Instagram of his time with Stone Temple Pilots.
Some of his friends and bandmates in the rock world wished him farewell on social media.
We will continue to stay with this story as it develops. Rest in peace, Scott.
