Sturgill Simpson Covers Nirvana’s ‘In Bloom’ Like You’ve Never Heard It Before

With Sturgill Simpson’s third studio album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, coming out next month, we’re now getting our second taste of the country star’s new record. The first single was the darker and heavier (at least for Simpson) “Brace for Impact,” and now the country singer has shared his very unique take on Nirvana’s classic “In Bloom.” Simpson takes the loud, heavy, distorted song to a much more country-focused area adding pedal steel, horns, and his crooning vocals.

The country-tinged cover first premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio Show where he described the new album by saying:

“I didn’t want to make another psychedelic country record. But as soon as I open my mouth, it’s always going to be a country record. You’re always a little nervous because people might expect more of the same or they might not be as willing to take the journey with you, but I think any of the true fans probably wouldn’t expect anything less.”

2014’s breakthrough album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was Simpson’s biggest album to date and got him on the music world’s map. Now with this Nirvana cover, along with arranging the theme for HBO’s Scorsese-directed music show Vinyl, Simpson is on pace to have an even bigger 2016.
