Alessia Cara has built up a devoted fan base in record time after the 19-year-old’s single “Here” seemed to explode out of nowhere. And it looks like mega-star Taylor Swift is chief among Cara fangirls.

Swift interviewed Cara backstage at her recent concert in Tampa after formally inducting her into the #Squad with a duet of “Here.” Yahoo! recorded the interview and just released the first half, wherein Swift asks Cara about her decision to put music ahead of image and to release a bummer of a song as her first single.

After Swift calls “Here” the first hit song “about a party being lame,” Cara expresses her disbelief that the debut track is now getting spun at actual parties, lame and otherwise.

“It’s funny because now I hear that it gets played at parties,” Cara said. “If you think about it, it’s such a miserable song for a single. But it worked, right?”

Cara also discusses growing up in an Italian family, the process of signing to Def Jam, and the party that inspired her inescapable single. Check it out up top.
