Thom Yorke’s ‘Why Can’t We Get Along’ Is A Synth-Heavy Track Built Upon Loops

After debuting a new song called “I Am A Very Rude Person” at his breathtaking solo show in Hollywood late last year, Thom Yorke has shared the official video for another new track, this one called “Why Can’t We Get Along.”

The song soundtracks a short film promoting an upcoming line from fashion label Rag & Bone, which features appearances from House Of Cards’ Kate Mara and Baby Driver’s Ansel Elgort. According to the video’s description, Yorke created the spastic, synth-heavy track exclusively for the short film to create “a feeling of friction, which is paralleled by the movement of the cast of characters.”

Yorke has a long history of creating music for Rag & Bone, dating back to 2015’s “Villain.” For his latest contribution, “Why Can’t We Get Along” is a six-minute track built on loops, with layers added over the top to build tension to a break, where it morphs into an orchestral number. Check out the track and video above.

The short film was shot in one day and, in addition to Mara and Elgort, features appearances from members of the American Ballet Theater, as well as HipLet Ballerinas, YouTube sensation Kandi Reign, and members of Bulletrun Parkour. It was co-directed by Benjamin Millepied, Aaron Duffy, and Bob Partington with the help of cinematographer Darius Khondji, who all worked together to create an evocative visual element for Yorke’s contemplative new track.
