Tidal Continued To Charge Former Users Accidentally Without Their Knowledge

The introduction of Tidal into the streaming wars has not really gone well. Sure, big names have been attached, the project is led by Jay Z after all, but that hasn’t been enough to get people to, you know, pay to stream music. And if they are paying to stream music, they aren’t going with Tidal, by and large. Recently, the company took another hit, as it turns out former subscribers had their credit cards charged for accounts they no longer have.

This, naturally, is not a good look for them. While the exact number of subscribers who were charged has not been divulged, the Billboard report says that it was “several” former users, we do know that they were charged $19.99 despite the fact they had closed their accounts.

Now, this isn’t as sordid as it sounds. It’s being chalked up to an error, and Tidal says they have already refunded the money to the parties in question. On top of that, they have offered them three free months of their “premium” tier, which is $9.99 per month.

Of course, since these were people who had already decided they weren’t interested in Tidal, they may not even want the three month free trial. It does feel like a bit of a ploy to try and get the users back, nestled within a conciliatory gesture, but that’s not likely to work. The company also named Jeff Toig as their third CEO in nine months, so, all in all, these are not good times for Tidal.
