Newt Gingrich Scolds Trump For His Early Morning Outburst On Twitter: ‘There’s No Excuse’

Donald Trump may have earned the ire of some people during this election cycle, but one person who as seemed to have his back in tough times is Newt Gingrich. The former speaker of the house has stood by the Donald through thick and thin, helping spin his rhetoric when he makes the media rounds. But Gingrich seems to be a little disappointed with Trump after his early morning tweetstorm directed at Alicia Machado.

On Friday, Gingrich stopped by Fox News to talk to Sean Hannity about the week in Trump. When the topic of the Republican presidential nominee’s tweetstorm about former Miss Universe Machado was brought up, Gingrich seemed a bit disappointed. Trump had earlier this week let a barrage of tweets go out in the wee hours of the morning, insinuating there was a sex tape of Machado floating around. He has scolded Trump a bit in the past, but appeared to lay down the law, telling Hannity that his tweets were not helping matters:

“You can’t tweet at 3 o’clock in the morning. Period. There’s no excuse, ever, not if you’re going to be president of the United States. If [Trump’s] gotta be himself then he may well not win. If he’s willing to grow into the role of POTUS, he may well win.”

That’s some tough love from a guy who was thought to have Trump’s back no matter what. But Gingrich is not mad with the comments he made, just the manner he conveyed them. On Thursday, Gingrich was defending Trump’s previous comments about Machado, even going as far as to call the entire circumstance “the new Benghazi lie.” This situation regarding Machado may have gotten a bit out of control, but she has held her own by defending herself.
