What’s not to love about magic? One minute, you’re holding an object and the next, it’s gone. Or is it?! Well, that’s the beauty of magic. That’s why one Texas congressman is trying to “preserve the rare and valuable artform.”

Rep. Pete Sessions introduced a resolution this week that aims to recognize magic as a national treasure. The conservative congressman name drops notable magicians Harry Houdini and David Copperfield in H. RES. 642, and credits magic as “a unifying force across cultural, religious, ethnic, and age differences in our diverse Nation.”

Session says magic is most beneficial to children because it can help improve their physical and mental abilities, as well as boost their self-esteem. The resolution goes on to reference David Copperfield’s Project Magic and how it uses magic as a “form of therapy for physical, psychological, and social disabilities.”

Elsewhere in the resolution:

“Whereas magic is an art form with the unique power and potential to impact the lives of all people; Whereas magic enables people to experience the impossible; Whereas magic is used to inspire and bring wonder and happiness to others; Whereas magic has had a significant impact on other art forms.”

Politico also notes this isn’t the first time Sessions has tried to get magic officially recognized as a national treasure. Perhaps this time he’ll finally be able to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
