Mitt Romney does not like Donald Trump. That’s an understatement, of course, and anyone who’s paid attention to the past month of election madness knows Romney is actively campaigning against the GOP frontrunner. The former Republican nominee already ripped Trump while pleading with voters to not vote an embarrassment into the White House. This had no effect on recent primaries, and Trump later slung an uncouth slam in Romney’s direction.
Well, Romney attended a closed-door event (held by the National Republican Congressional Committee) on Tuesday evening, and folks are talking about what happened. Mitt drew upon the confusion that folks felt after recently hearing Melania Trump, an immigrant and non-native speaker of English, publicly speak for the first time. Melania later outlined the difference between herself and “those Mexicans,” but the disconnect is still there. She’s married to a man who wants to build a Wall. Likewise, Trump’s first wife, Ivana, popped over to America from the Czech Republic. His second wife, Marla Maples, hails from the U.S.A., but Trump habitually romances foreign-born women. And Romney brought this one liner:
“Donald Trump has had several foreign wives. It turns out that there … really are jobs Americans won’t do.”
Granted, Romney’s joke isn’t entirely original. George Lopez made a very similar crack last year to his Facebook followers. The beauty of these remarks is that Romney (and Lopez) are not making fun of Ivana or Melania. Nope, these jokes are solely pointed at Trump’s hypocrisy. Whereas Trump spent last night throwing shots at Heidi Cruz instead of at his rival, Ted. He was very much laughing at Heidi while retweeting an unflattering photo that compared her to Melania. Ted responded in kind: “Donald, real men don’t attack women. Your wife is lovely, and Heidi is the love of my life.”
