Hillary Clinton’s New York victory over Bernie Sanders doesn’t leave her room to slack on the campaign trail. The candidates swiftly turned their attentions towards next week’s primaries in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, and Rhode Island. Yet their main focus sits with the 210 delegates available in Pennsylvania. Both are hitting hard in the state, but there’s a distraction on the way. On Friday, the Senate Judiciary Committee ruled that the FBI was allowed to leak what they recovered from Clinton’s 30,000 deleted emails. Whether they’ll actually do so, and whether it will have an effect on voters are both debatable. Clinton also has other worries.
During a Reading, Pennsylvania rally, Sanders again brought up Clinton’s Wall Street ties. He loves to put the term on repeat, and he’s previously hammered away at her locked-up transcripts for a $225,000 speech. During a recent debate, Clinton claimed that she “called out” Goldman Sachs in this address, which makes no sense. There’s no way anyone would pay her that much money to be reprimanded, and Sanders won’t let go of this inconsistency. Nor will he drop a reported $25 million Clinton Super PAC donation from Wall Street. At the Reading rally, he unleashed some sarcasm:
“Now, I kind of think if you’re going to get $225,000 for a speech, it must be a brilliant, insightful, world-shattering speech, don’t you think? It must be a speech that would probably solve all of the crises facing our planet and then some. And it was probably written in Shakespearean prose. And I think a speech of that extraordinary magnitude should be shared with the American people.”
He’s got a point. Why won’t she simply release the transcripts? On Thursday, Clinton fielded the same question from a voter on GMA and her story changed. Instead of claiming she lectured Goldman Sachs, she said the speech was “predominantly about what is going on in the world,” including the targeting of Osama bin Laden. The real story may never arrive, but a refusal to put the transcripts in front of eyeballs is pretty suspect. Sanders continues to grill her during debates, and she won’t budge.
Also in Pennsylvania, Clinton spent Friday morning with a group of ladies during a conversation at Curds ‘n Whey restaurant in Jenkintown. She spoke with the women about unequal pay and paid family leave. Clinton told a story about how hard it was to find childcare when her babysitter got sick, and she spoke to the “illegal” way many women are pushed out of jobs after pregnancy-related medical problems.
